Born in Zaragoza on 29 December 1975, when she was 19 years old, she suffered from a neuropathy that led to her losing mobility in both legs. After a period adapting to her new situation, she learned to swim and her first coach encouraged her to compete almost immediately. From that time on, she started to stand out as exceptional at national and international trials and championships.
She is currently an elite athlete, holder of the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, gives conferences for public and private organisations, and is a personal and sport coach. With 27 Paralympic medals, she is only one away from holding the absolute world record held by Michael Phelps.
