Sara Khadem

Sarasadat Khademalsharieh, also known as Sara Khadem, is an Iranian chess player who holds the titles of International Master and Woman Grandmaster. After starting to play when she was only eight years old, she was World Under-12 and Under-16 Champion in the Blitz category, and runner-up at the World Junior Chess Championship Girls in 2014 and at the Women’s World Blitz Championship in 2018. She has taken part in over 100 international tournaments, winning dozens of medals and titles and, since 2018, has been continuously ranked among the top 20 players in the world.

Khadem participated at the World Rapid Chess Championship in Kazakhstan without donning the traditional hijab, as a pledge of support to the uprisings of Iranian women after the death of Mahsa Amini. Since January, she has lived in Spain, after the Iranian authorities issued an arrest warrant for her.
