Pilar Garrido

Pilar Garrido Pilar has a degree in Medicine and a Cum Laude PhD from the Autonomous University of Madrid. She works as an associate professor at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Alcalá, and is also the head of the Medical Oncology Department at Ramón y Cajal Hospital and co-director of the cancer division of the Ramón y Cajal Health Research Institute (IRYCIS). Member of the Council of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) as a coordinator of the Women for Oncology Committee, she also participates or has participated on different committees for international associations such as ESMO, IASLC and ASCO.

In Spain, she was the first female president of the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM), of the National Council of Health Science Specialities, the National Committee on Medical Oncology and of FACME (Federation of Spanish Medical-Scientific Associations). She actively works on research projects centred on thoracic tumours and gender perspectives, both from the angle of gender differences in lung cancer patients and analysing gender bias in leadership positions in the world of medicine.

Chief researcher at HURYC for over 150 clinical trials, she works closely in developing consensus documents and national and international guidelines, with D1-rated publications in a wide range of journals. She is an associate professor for both undergraduate and postgraduate classes at the UAH, supervising theses and final degree projects, and taking part in different undergraduate and master degrees at different universities.

Awarded on many occasions, she received the Albert Jovell Award for Commitment to Cancer Patients, the Sanitarias Award in the category of scientific associations, the ASEICA Research Award for Women and, in 2022, a distinction from the Ministry of Health in recognition of FACME’s work during Covid.
